Interview with Below head honcho, Adam Shelton
15th Jan, 2010 | by Pete Mad

On the back of a succesful year organising some of the countries best parties, a festival in Croatia and the launch of a new record label, we got chance to catch up with Adam Shelton, Below founder and half of exciting new label, One Records.

Hi Adam, congratulations on the launch of your new label and of course on your first EP, Feel The Musik, which you’ve done with your good friend, Subb-An.  How did the tracks come about?

The’ Musik EP’ is the start of One.Records and the basis of the label is that there will be two tracks per release and some dj tools, the vision track is a track that Subb-An had just finished and was perfect for the flip side to the label, the musik is a track that features more of what we are both about, the track came together fairly quickly to be fair, i think that is a good sign that we can work well together.

Could you tell us a little about your involvement with One Records and how it came about?

One.Records is the next step in myself and Subb-An's musical path, we have been doing a lot of edits together and different things and feel it is the right time for us both to start out own project.  There is a lot of room for some good UK based labels so we are moving forward with it.

Could you outline who’s involved behind the scenes with One Records and who else is lined up to feature on the label?

The label is run by the two of us, but I really want it to be a friends label with the input that happens along the way, very much the same we have run Below where yes we have guests but friends play a big part in the project also.

We have coming up Little Fritter from Australia who is a new exciting artist, Buckley from Back to Basics in Leeds and a remix from Shaun Reeves all of which are very different but solid releases

What other genres of music are you into?

My favourite music is acid house,i like lots of different stuff but that is my love.

If you could choose anyone, with which other artist would you most like to work?

I'll have to give you three here as i can't single out one person, I would say for a remix on the label Quarion or Josh Wink, for a track it’d have to Catz n Dogz.  They could pull some good stuff out of the bag and I really like what they are on with at the moment.

What do you think to the scene in Birmingham at the moment?

Birmingham is very hard, there are some good parties and great venues it is still very behind other major cities on the house/techno scene

Over the years, you’ve had many different parties in all kinds of random locations.  Describe your favourite 2 parties with favourite locations, who played etc.

(i) Bank Holiday at The Rainbow with Daniel Stefanik, Hector, Tristan da Cuhna and Despo was kicking!  500 people in the sun full from start to finish I would say our best party.

(ii) The Summer pool party with Matthias Tanzmann, Palm Trees, 1000 people in an emptied pool in the sun, great vibes and Tanzmann was amazing.

When you play, what is your usual set up these days? Laptop, CDJs, vinyl?

All three,.I use Serato, vinyl and the odd cd, depends on the set up of the club.

What’s your favourite City to play outside of Birmingham?

Leeds, I love it there, great crowd, great parties.

What’s been the highlight of 2009 for you and why?

Cocoon in the Park was mega, it was an amazing gig and a really cool thing to be involved with.

What’s been the biggest challenge for you this year?

The Rainbow roof situation, nearly facing closure, for sure this was the biggest challenge. But we got through it so it is nice to be able to answer that with a positive outlook.

What is your favourite item of clothing?

My low rider coat from Japan.

 What’s in store for 2010?

2010 is going to be a big change for me, I’m taking a step back from the Rainbow venues which I have worked very hard on the last two years to concentrate fully One Records which I;m very much looking forward to. To get the chance to do something you really love is so nice.  So tunnel vision for me from now on...
